“Broom moss,” Dicranum scoparium, is a large, common and acrocarp (i.e., the kind of moss that has upright stems side-by-side with sporophytes at their tips). Notice the hairlike leaves that seem swept to one side, as if the prevailing wind made them grow that way. This was seen yesterday at the edge of a sandstone ledge in southern Ohio’s Hocking County.
